San Marcos Extends Construction Timeline For Wonder World, Hunter RD As Phase 4 Begins

On Tuesday, Jan. 19, construction work began on Phase 4 of the intersection safety and improvement project at Wonder World Drive and Hunter Road.

This is the last major phase of the project, which will focus on the corner of the intersection closest to the Subway restaurant in the Village at Park South shopping center.

Drivers should expect several lane closures while work continues at the intersection:

• Northbound Hunter Road is reduced to one lane. Drivers turning right are encouraged to use Stagecoach Trail as an alternate route.
• East bound Wonder World Drive will be reduced to two lanes.
• Westbound Wonder World Drive will be reduced to two lanes. Drivers turning left are encouraged to use Stagecoach Trail as an alternate route.

Drivers will see traffic detour signs in the area. Crews have also placed erosion controls at the intersection. Construction on this phase is expected to take about two weeks but could be delayed due to forecasted rain.

Once Phase 4 is complete, crews will begin the nighttime mill and overlay process as well as installation of traffic striping, signage, and delineators to achieve minimal impacts to traffic. All construction is expected to be complete by the end of February 2021. 

The City of San Marcos Engineering and Capital Improvements Department initially began the improvement project at Wonder World Drive and Hunter Road on Monday, Nov. 30.

Once complete, the safety and intersection improvements will include a two-way left turn lane, a pedestrian refuge island, sidewalks and curb ramps, pedestrian signal poles and new striping for bicycle lanes. Existing striping along Hunter Road between San Antonio Street and Wonder World Drive has also been replaced.

Lone Star Sitework of Wimberley is completing construction for the $713,196 project.

The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) provided $445,000 in federal funding.

The remainder of project costs were funded through the City’s Capital Improvements program.
