Hays County residents have been reporting a phone scam that has fraudulently deprived victims of thousands of dollars.
In this scam, the victim receives a phone call from someone claiming to be a Hays County Sheriff’s Office employee. These calls usually come from the local 512 area code. The scammer then tells the victim that they have warrants for their arrest and that the victim must pay money to the scammers to avoid being arrested on these warrants.
Victims are then instructed to purchase prepaid Visa or MasterCard credit cards and then provide the card number to the scammers in order to have the warrants recalled. Some victims have been specifically told to purchase these cards at CVS, Walgreens, Dollar General, or other similar stores. Many of the reported victims have been senior citizens.
