Barack Obama was first elected to the White House in 2008. It was a historic election as the United States, for the first time had elected an African American to be the leader of their country.
Whether he was a good or bad president will be debated for years to come. But the Obama administration had hurtles to overcome.
President Obama inherited the war against terrorism begun by President George W. Bush’s administration. He also had to deal with a recession and the years of recovery that followed.
On Jan. 10, Obama will give his farewell address in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. And our president-elect, Donald Trump, will be sworn into office on Jan. 20 as the 45th president of the United States.
“Since 2009, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges, and come through them stronger,” Obama said in a statement about his farewell address. “That’s because we have never let go of a belief that has guided us ever since our founding—our conviction that, together, we can change this country for the better.”
The first presidential farewell address was given by President George Washington in 1789 and has been repeated by many presidents since.
