Flood Map Changes Coming to Central Texas – Details at Open House Events – Preliminary flood map for portions of Caldwell, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Hays counties ready for public view
DENTON, Texas – Preliminary flood maps for parts of Hays, Caldwell, Gonzales and Guadalupe counties are now available for review for anyone who lives near or has a business along the San Marcos and Blanco rivers.
In Hays County, the flood hazard study includes areas along the Blanco and San Marcos rivers. It includes many tributaries: Bypass, Cypress, Purgatory, Sink and Willow Spring Creeks, Onion Creek, Barton and Bear Creeks and their tributaries.
The maps show how flood risks in those areas may have changed and will help residents decide on the need to buy flood insurance. Once approved, community leaders will also use these new maps to make decisions about future building and development. Property owners are encouraged to examine the new maps at http://maps.RiskMAP6.com for details on specific areas scheduled for remapping.
The new maps are a cooperative effort between the state of Texas, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), local counties and communities.
“We’ve worked with our state and local partners to bring this critical information to the area. We encourage the public to review the new maps to become aware of future flood risks,” said FEMA Region 6 Administrator Tony Robinson. “It is important for the community to be a participant in the flood mapping process.”
The following public open house is scheduled for residents and business owners:
Thursday, August 24, 2017
San Marcos Activity Center
501 E Hopkins St,
San Marcos, TX 78666
2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Local community, insurance and FEMA officials will be at the open house and will be available to answer questions.
For anyone who cannot attend the open houses, they can contact their local floodplain administrator at city hall or their local county government building. The public can also find the preliminary maps on the web at: http://msc.fema.gov/portal or http://maps.RiskMAP6.com
