SAN MARCOS – The San Marcos Rattlers (1-4, 0-3 in conference) varsity football team drop third straight in a 35-7 conference game loss against the visiting Hays High School (3-2, 2-1 in conference), behind a versatile running attack totaling 284 rushing yards and three touchdowns, dropping to an overall record of 1-4 for the season.
The Rattlers, who scored only one touchdown and surrendered an average of 431 all-purpose yards in their three straight losses, dropping three and a half games behind the Westlake Chaparrals for first place in the 6A Region IV District 26 Football Standings.
“As I’m talking about finding momentum-getters, those are momentum killers, and we’ve been doing that even with the false starts,” Walsh said. “False starts are momentum killers. So, we just gotta keep focusing and I think teaching them what it does to your ballgame. I think the biggest unspoken science of sports is momentum, and we’re just not able to grab it right now.”
The Rattlers’ second-half struggles, penalties, and sixth fumble in the last two games spoiled an otherwise solid first two-quarters of football for 1-4 Rattlers in this I-35 rival game. Ultimately, the miscues proved to be too much for the host to overcome.
For the game, the Rattlers had 247 yards of total offense to the Hays High School team 341 yards of total offense. The Rattlers finished with 225 rushing yards as a team, and the Rebels had 284 rushing yards.
The Rattlers currently sport a 1-4 record. Next for the Rattlers is an away game against Austin for a 6A Region IV District 26 game on Friday, October 30.
San Marcos will try to secure their second win of the season against a Maroons team coming off a 62-20 league loss to Lake Travis (Austin, TX). The Maroons record now stands at 3-1.
