Rio Claro Studio Announces Guest Artist For 3rd Thursday Gallery Walk In September

Rio Claro Studio is excited to announce their guest artist for September’s 3rd Thursday Gallery Walk will be local San Marcos artist, Anji Johnson. Working in a variety of mediums ranging from collage and mixed media to assemblage, Johnson will also show jewelry; much of which is made in the same overlapping layers of found materials and objects. The exhibition of her work will run from September 15, 2016, through October 8, 2016. The opening reception for Anji Johnson will be on September 15th and will run from 6 – 9 PM.

Johnson’s work will be hanging in Rio Claro Studio’s newly reformatted gallery space at in conjunction with the September launch in San Marcos Texas of the inaugural Mermaid Week 2016. In addition, the evening of September 15th is the kickoff of the Fall 2016 schedule of 3rd Thursday Gallery Walk in San Marcos TX.

Anji Johnson’s flat work is richly layered with text, historical documents, painted numbers, fabric small decorations and bits of photographs;  all densely concentrated into small boards and box constructions, much of it found materials, many of them collected over the years and saved for decades by the artist. Steeped in the colors of aged documents and antiquity itself; sepias, cinnamons, ecrus, bleached whites and espressos, her palette is warm and lived-in. Johnson recycles and repurposes most things and so in her art; each object and medium, like keys, tea and colloidal silver, become an allegory for finding one’s way, exploring within and without. She has said, “I don’t really think of myself as an artist, more an archeologist.”
