Rollover Crash Ends In One Fatality In Kyle

Kyle, TX – Kyle Police are reporting a fatality of a male driver following an accident in the early morning hours of May 22. According to Police Chief Jeff Barnett, at just before 1 a.m. officers responded to IH-35 northbound at the 217 Exit ramp in reference to a multi-vehicle crash, with reports of at least one vehicle rolled over.

“Witnesses on the scene told our officers that a male subject was ejected from his vehicle and appeared to be deceased,” Barnett said.

Police located a male subject on the left emergency shoulder. He was officially pronounced deceased on the scene by Hays County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Beth Smith. The driver’s name is not being released until police notify next of kin. Police said he is believed to be a resident of Mexico but may have ties to this area.

Prior to the accident on the interstate, Barnett said the green pickup was involved in a hit and run accident at Bebee Rd. and I-35 access road on the east side of the highway.

Barnett said witnesses told police that the green pickup struck a white Chevrolet pickup driven by a female from Kyle, then fled the scene.

“The green pickup was then seen traveling northbound on the frontage road,” Barnett said. “It then crashed through the median onto the main lanes of I-35 at the 217 exit ramp.”

He said the truck rolled over and the driver, who investigators say was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected.

According to Barnett, the green pickup came to a stop in the main lanes of IH-35 where it was struck by a grey Volkswagen Jetta.

“The impact from the Volkswagen hitting the green Chevrolet caused the bed of the pickup to come free of the cab, essentially becoming debris in the road,” he said. “A white Toyota Camry and a green Toyota Camry then both hit the bed of the pickup as they were swerving to avoid the crash.”

One driver was transported to an Austin area with non life-threatening injuries. He was treated and released.

Barnett said the highway was shut down for two hours following the crash.

“Our Accident Reconstruction Team was on scene gathering information and collecting data to piece everything together,” he said.

He added that Smith ordered an autopsy of the deceased driver but Barnett said it’s too early to tell whether alcohol or other substances were involved. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Barnett said. “Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kyle Police at 512-268-3232.”
