San Marcos Animal Shelter Continues Modified Hours This Week…

The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter will continue modified hours this week as staff and outside animal rescue agencies treat animals recently seized in an animal cruelty case by the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.

Hours of operation

  • Tuesday, Nov. 20: The Adoption Center will be open from 11:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.; receiving and reclaim from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 21: Adoption Center closed (normal for Wednesday); receiving and reclaim will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 22 – 25 Closed to the public for Thanksgiving holiday.

The shelter does not have space to intake cats, and is only handling emergency intakes for dogs on a case-by-case basis.

The seized animals have been housed in a vacant climate-controlled office space and attended to daily by staff and volunteers.  Arrangements are being made to move the remaining offsite animals to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter.

Normal procedures for receiving unsanitary & malnourished animals

  • Cleaning and inspecting the animals
  • Attempting to rehydrate and introduce food
  • Daily kennel cleaning
  • Thorough medical evaluation from veterinarians
  • Individualized treatment plans ranging from simple care to interventions such as administering antibiotics and performing surgical procedures.

Placement of seized animals

Dogs seized in the Hays County Sheriff’s Office animal neglect case are being made ready for adoption on a case-by-case basis.

Cats are currently not available for adoption or transfer as one of the seized cats tested positive for Histoplasmosis, a fungus-based infection associated with concentrated animal droppings. Due to this positive test, all remaining cats are being held for further evaluation and possible testing.

The shelter is in need of the following items:

  • Disposable litter pans
  • Canned/wet cat food
  • Kitty Litter/Equine pelletized bedding
