San Marcos Announces Completion Of 4-Year Streetlight Replacement Program

The City of San Marcos announced Monday, December 3, the San Marcos Electric Utility’s completion of a four-year project to replace all current streetlight fixtures with light emitting diode (LED) fixtures.

According to the city, the project was completed in September 2018. The light replacement, which cost $705,053, will enable a projected annual savings of $37,844 in electric usage costs, has a lifespan of 20 years and carries a 10-year replacement warranty, further reducing maintenance costs over time.

The LED streetlights are dark sky compliant and minimize glare while reducing light pollution, increase star visibility, and improve the health and well-being of nocturnal animals as well as human sleep patterns.

“This project was a significant undertaking for the City and staff, requiring substantial financial and staffing resources to complete.” Said Tyler Hjorth, P.E.
