San Marcos Celebrates One Year Anniversary Of Children’s Park Playscape Grand Opening

The City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Departments is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the grand opening of the newly remodeled and inclusive Children’s Park Playscape.

The Children’s Park playscape was originally constructed in November of 1992 through a community build process with both City funds and donations of the monetary and physical kind and has served thousands of San Marcos and Central Texas children over the last 25 years.

In 2013, due to deteriorating condition and ADA accessibility, the playscape was added to the 10-year CIP with design to be funded in 2016 and construction scheduled in 2017. In February of 2017, City Council authorized the selection of Leathers and Associates for the design of the Children’s playscape renovation.

The new design features an inclusive playground for children of all abilities. There are two distinct play areas for children ages 2 to 5, and ages 5 to 12. The playscape features numerous components with increased accessibility focus including the poured-in-place safety surface and has been enjoyed by thousands of kids and kids-at-heart since opening in May 2018.

In honor of the anniversary, the City of San Marcos is inviting the community to purchase a personalized fence picket to honor a family member, friend or business.

The cost of the personalized picket is $25. Names are limited to 22 characters, including spaces. The pickets are made from 100 percent recycled milk jugs and are cedar colored plastic lumber with a green core. Each picket uses about 42 milk jugs.

Orders may be placed online at www.sanmarcostx.gov/parks under the “About” tab or at the Parks and Recreation Office, 401 E. Hopkins. Cash, check, and credit card is accepted. Picket sales began May 6 at noon and will end May 31 at 3 PM.
