San Marcos City Council To Discuss Hays CAD’s Appraisal Process, Tax Ceilings And Exemptions

Staff Reports

The San Marcos City Council will receive a presentation and hold a discussion regarding the Hays Central Appraisal District’s appraisal process during their regular work session.

Council will also discuss tax ceilings and exemptions and provide direction to the city manager.

According to the agenda, Tax Ceilings and Exemptions have been discussed during the past several budget cycles, and questions have been raised about how Hays CAD determines appraised values.

Laura Raven, Chief Appraiser, will provide the council with an explanation of the process and methods used by the Hays CAD.

Council will also be provided detailed information about tax exemptions and ceilings and the possible effect on the City’s revenue.

According to the Tax Property Tax Code section 6.01, an appraisal district is responsible for appraising property in the district for ad valorem tax purposes of each taxing unit that imposes ad valorem taxes on property in the district and is a political subdivision of the state.

Appraisal districts are governed by the Property Tax Code, Government Code, Tax Law and Rules Set Forth By The Comptroller Of The State Of Texas.

The San Marcos City Council will convene for their special work session at 3:00 PM in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.
