San Marcos City Council Votes To Enter Lease-Purchase Agreement

According to the agenda, the property is in an environmentally sensitive area; runoff from the land drains into Sink Creek.

The San Marcos City Council voted on Wednesday to enter a lease-purchase agreement with the Trust for Public Land to purchase 102 acres of undeveloped land.

The property is located near Country Estates and is currently owned by Texas State University. The lease-purchase agreement will break up the $1,270,000 price tag into three payments. The city will make three payments of $423,333 to purchase the property.

The lease-purchase agreement was item 13 under the consent agenda for Nov. 8th’s meeting; there was no discussion over the topic before the vote.

Council Member Jane Hughson recused herself from the vote on item 13; she stated the property in question was close to land she owned. The consent agenda was passed 7 to 0. Item 13 passed 6 to 0 with Hughson’s recusal.

According to the agenda, the property is in an environmentally sensitive area; runoff from the land drains into Sink Creek.

The purchase of the property continues the San Marcos City Council’s conservation efforts to protect land in environmentally sensitive areas from being developed.

Corridor News has requested three Public Information Requests on how much Park Land the city owns. We have been told to go to the Hays County CAD Property Search (City of San Marcos) as the COSM does not know how many acres they own.

The CAD search brings up 18 pages with a total of 442 properties. To read the City of San Marcos responses to our Public Information Requests click HERE.
