Staff Reports
The final results for the local election were in around 11:12 PM Tuesday night announcing voters’ choice for city council.
Jane Hughson won the mayoral race against incumbent John Thomaides with 52.73 percent of the vote.
“San Marcos is a great city with so many opportunities! We will continue our economic development efforts for quality jobs, our workforce housing task force, protection of our neighborhoods and the environment through our land development code, and remembering our low and moderate income residents,” said incoming Mayor Jane Hughson. “I look forward to seeing us ALL work together to make San Marcos even more amazing than it is today!”
In other news, incumbent candidate Melissa Derrick was re-elected to City Council Place 6. Derrick will be sworn in on November 14 at 5:30 PM. The ceremony will take place at San Marcos City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins.
No candidate for City Council Places 4 and 5 received more than 50 percent of the vote in their races. According to the San Marcos ordinance requiring a candidate to receive 50 percent or more of the popular vote, the city will hold a runoff election for Places 4 and 5 before the first of the year.
The runoff election will be held December 11. Polling information will be announced once the runoff election is officially called.
