San Marcos High School Winter Career Fair

San Marcos High School recently hosted its Winter Career Fair with 14 businesses participating. Business professionals met and interacted with SMHS students through presentation stations set up in the gymnasium. Small groups of students rotated through each presentation, allowing them to get an overview of each business. There was time allowed for questions and answers, and several of the businesses brought samples and brochures about their business.

According to Career and Technical Education Coordinator Mike Doyle, student interactions dealt with special skills needed in each field, job requirements and day-to-day operations.

Businesses and their representatives who participated included: Lindy Cardenas of Hays Nursing & Rehab, Trish Wilder of Edward Jones, Margaret Lindsey and Tabitha Walsh of the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce, Devin Kleinfelder of Center Point Energy, Gloria Olivo-Mendoza of the Hays Caldwell Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse, Victor Garza of the Greater San Marcos Partnership, Julie Hollar of the San Marcos Youth Service Bureau, Ruth Molina from Yogurt in Love, Julia Ramsey-New of the Greater San Marcos Youth Council, Deanna Lalich from Ozona National Bank, Cassandra Harrington and Rachel Vargas from My Emergency Room 24/7, Heath Herrera from HH Fitness, Inc., Sheldon Kramer of Corridor Electric, and Elva Zdeb from Embassy Suites Hotel and Convention Center.

Coming soon is the annual SMHS Groundhog Day Job Shadowing event scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2015, from 9 am to 3 pm. Students are placed as interns for the day with local businesses. If you or your business is interested in participating, contact Doyle at (512) 393-6893 or email him at Michael.Doyle@smcisd.net.
