Living Art/Dying Art: The Historical Human Impulse to Tattoo

According to the Smithsonian, the oldest tattoo has been carbon-dated at over 5,000 years old. From the Neolithic Age to the Industrial Age and beyond, what compels humans to endure physical pain for the sake of art? How do humans find self-expression in the permanence of ink?

 

Join tattoo artist Morgan Egan for an exploration into the social and historical roots of tattooing at the San Marcos Public Library on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, from 1-2 p.m. Egan is a tattoo artist at Classic Tattoo studio in downtown San Marcos who has traveled the world in pursuit of this enigmatic art form.

Bring your paperwork to the San Marcos Public Library for Resource Roundup Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Library staff will provide free, confidential assistance for your individual resource needs. Staff can assist you in completing job applications, resumes, college applications, government forms, and much more.

 

 

Easy Tai Chi

You may be surprised to learn that Tai Chi Chuan translates to “supreme boxing.” That’s right! The graceful movements of Tai Chi are rooted in the martial arts.

 

Join Brenda Ball for a free, all-ages lesson in Easy Tai Chi for beginners at the San Marcos Public Library on Aug. 29, 2016, at 7 p.m. Tai Chi is a meditation in motion that uses synchronized breath work and safe, gentle body movements to awaken mental clarity and peace.

 

 

 

The San Marcos Public Library and Community Action, Inc. bring you free GED test prep

 

Community Action, Inc. offers free classes for GED test preparation at the San Marcos Public Library. Register for classes during open enrollment this August by calling 512.393.8200 for an appointment or by visiting the Adult Learning Center in the library Monday to Thursday from 1-4 p.m. Registration includes orientation and an assessment and takes three hours to complete.
