The San Marcos Police Department responded to an incident along Interstate 35 in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 10, 2021, that resulted in the shooting death of the suspect.
On Thursday, April 15 San Marcos Police Department released the identity of the man killed in a shooting that involved San Marcos officers.
The decedent has been identified as 31-year-old Rescue Eram. Eram was born in the Federated States of Micronesia and resided in the San Marcos, TX area for the last couple of years. Next of kin have been notified.
At approximately 12:19 a.m. San Marcos officers were alerted to a male walking in traffic on Interstate 35 near southbound mile marker 204 for Seguin (TX-82, TX-123).
Officers witnessed the man (Eram) walk along the retaining wall then cross traffic and attempted to detain the man for his safety and for the safety of passing motorists.
Officers noted that Eram was holding a knife or similar object in his hand, and at one point threatened officers by moving aggressively toward them.
Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation before the suspect turned and ran in front of traffic, resulting in a near collision with an 18-wheeler semi-trailer truck.
Officers again tried to detain Eram, but the suspect turned and fully charged officers with a weapon held above his head in a manner similar to a striking or slashing motion.
The suspect was shot and officers began to administer life-saving efforts including CPR.
Hays County EMS personnel were present at the scene and the suspect was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Maggie H. Moreno and was transported to the Medical Examiner’s office.
The deceased had no identification on his person, so upon identification by the Medical Examiner, the next of kin will be notified and the media and public will be informed.
Three investigations are currently underway, including an independent investigation by the Texas Rangers Division of the Department of Public Safety, an investigation by the San Marcos Criminal Investigation Division, and an internal SMPD investigation. Two officers have been placed on administrative leave per department policy.

Am very thankful that in this case, my wife was not forced to negotiate her way past this one, unlike the one who today was taking a nap directly next to the front door of the Dollar General on Comal Street, and who when awake, panhandles aggressively in the parking lot--but as of yet does not use a knife.
.
Due to the policy of shelters which cater to persons with obvious drug and alcohol dependencies and knowingly allow those persons to leave the premises and wander at will among the nearby community, the City and County for these reasons should enact ordinances prohibiting such establishments within the city limits. Note to shelters: Real love starts at home, and is not shown by assuring unconditional housing and food to addicts of all kinds within our community, and contrary to the goals our city council, we do not want our city to become another Austin.
.
On the other hand, if these local shelters really wanted to act upon their responsibility to the community, they would impose and enforce some form of limitations and conditions on these bullies, for example, if you're reported loitering on private property or in the presence of alcohol you will be denied your free bed and meals. But gosh, that wouldn't be fair if our local shelters stopped unconditionally facilitating these manipulative psychos who regularly own our community on a daily basis. After all, if one of them were your own child, you'd really want to encourage this, right ?
