On Thursday, Feb. 25 6:30 p.m. everyone is invited to the San Marcos Public Library for the next installment of the Hays County Master Gardner’s free workshop series. The Texas Superstar® Program identifies specific plants that have been proven to flourish in our Texas heat and soil. The plants are highly drought, disease, and insect tolerant, and provide stunning color and beauty while requiring minimal care or reliance on chemical pest control. Master gardeners will discuss using Superstars® in landscaping and vegetable gardening, and the requirements for their care.

Texas State University instructors and special guests bring the Philosophy Dialogue series to the San Marcos Public Library on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. from February 17 to April 6 as part of the University’s Common Experience program. This year’s theme for the Common Experience is “Bridged Through Stories: Shared Heritage of the United States and Mexico, an Homage to Dr. Tomás Rivera.” This series is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
Join Texas State University instructors, students, and special guests at the San Marcos Public Library on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 3:30 p.m. for a discussion on “Nuestro Futuro es Hoy:Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Immigrant Children” with Dr. Benjamin Aguilar, a psychologist with the South Texas Family Residential Center.
Dr. Benjamin Aguilar is a licensed clinical psychologist who has worked with unaccompanied immigrant minors and families for over 5 years. Dr. Aguilar completed his doctoral training at the University of Minnesota in both clinical psychology and child development. His studies focused on the impact of risk, adversity, and trauma on healthy as well as abnormal development. He published several studies on the influence of attachment and adversity on the development of antisocial behavior, delinquency, and aggression in high-risk populations. Dr. Aguilar’s clinical work has focused on children, adolescents and families from stressful and often traumatic backgrounds who are struggling at school, coping with family issues, involved with substance use, and are often involved with child protection and juvenile justice systems. A recent emphasis for Dr. Aguilar has been working with immigrant children and families who are fleeing chronic violence and trauma.
