Sierra Martin | Managing Editor

SAN MARCOS — The San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) has reported an increase in catalytic converter thefts in the city, with 301 being stolen since January 2019. SMPD said they are stepping up their efforts to reduce thefts and catch the offenders responsible.

This week, Chief Stan Standridge issued an administrative directive updating SMPD’s response to catalytic converter thefts.

Officers will be dispatched to take a report in the field and canvass the area for nearby video sources.? To ensure an officer is dispatched, online reporting of catalytic converter thefts is suspended. Reports can still be made at sanmarcostx.gov/policereport for some other offenses, including identity theft and vandalism.?

Sworn personnel will routinely patrol parking lots, apartment complexes, and other venues where thefts have historically occurred. Suspect information, tips to prevent offenses, and other pertinent information will be shared with the public.

The Department will partner with community businesses to host catalytic converter etching/ID events. According to SMPD, the first event is currently being planned for March 5, but more information will be shared soon.

The Department’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) will contact all recyclers to review recent catalytic converter sales in San Marcos. CID will share information with neighboring agencies in an effort to identify and apprehend offenders. Additionally, SMPD will research anti-theft devices and share best practices with the public.
