The San Marcos Police Department’s Blue Santa Program has delivered its last gift for the 2017 season.
Since 1972, the San Marcos Police Department’s Blue Santa program has been providing toys to local children who might not otherwise have gifts for Christmas.
Over 100 members of the community were present for the final wrapping day on December 19.
SMPD said officers delivered over 300 Christmas packages this holiday season and gave away 10 Amazon tablets to winners of the hourly raffle drawing December 22.
“When things got slow around the distribution center, Blue Santa grabbed his bag and went to spread a little Christmas cheer at Target, JC Penny and Five Below,” SMPD said on a recent Facebook post. “What a blast! It was fun for young and old, and no one knew Santa had a T-rex.”
On December 23, officers delivered the final packages to the people who’d requested their help; they were greeted with smiles and at times tears when they arrived with the gifts.
“One couple, in particular, I remember, when we knocked and announced Blue Santa the mom was so overjoyed and excited. In her excitement, she ran to the door leaving a hot pan on the stove. The next thing we knew the fire alarm went off (no fire, just smoke). Between dad fanning the smoke, the loud fire alarm and mom’s excitement it was pretty chaotic, but a good chaos. When mom caught her breath, she told us, ‘he’s going to be so excited! Please, can I take your picture?’
To everyone who participated in the San Marcos Police Blue Santa gift wrapping and packaging, thank you. Your skilled or unskilled wrapping, your time and your donations make what I described possible. As a community, we made a difference in several families Christmas. Merry Christmas to you all and happy new year!”
