San Marcos Police Department To Run The Torch For Special Olympics

SMPD’s run will be three miles long. All involved runners in the group will have an opportunity to carry the Olympic Torch if they would like.

The San Marcos Police Department will participate in the 2018 Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run on May 23.

“The purpose of the LE Torch Run is to bolster awareness of Special Olympics of Texas, as well as to raise funds for Special Olympics,” said Chief of Police Chase Stapp. “This is a very meaningful way for us to support the community, and I’m proud our department is involved.”

Originally, the torch run teams from various agencies would carry the Special Olympics Torch to the State Olympic Summer Games each year, but the event has now evolved into a ceremonial run for each participating agency.

SMPD’s run will be three miles long. All involved runners in the group will have an opportunity to carry the Olympic Torch if they would like.  The route will take runners through the Rio Vista neighborhood and Downtown, with a beginning and end at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. A Special Olympic athlete will make remarks at 9 a.m., with the run starting at 9:45 a.m. The run is scheduled to finish at 10:45 a.m., with refreshments at the San Marcos Activity Center at 11 a.m.

The public is invited to attend the festivities and is encouraged to stand along the Torch Run route to cheer on our San Marcos PD Special Olympics Law Enforcement team.
