San Marcos Police Warning of Door-To-Door Scammers

The San Marcos Police Department would like the public to be aware of a potential scam involving people claiming to be City employees.

“We urge residents not to allow anyone in their homes if there is even the slightest question about their identity,” said Chief of Police Chase Stapp.

A resident of the Sunset Acres community near Broadway Street contacted city officials Thursday morning and described three individuals who were posing as City employees asking for permission to enter the home and test the water.

The resident did not allow them inside, and the scammers said that they would come back later.

The three scammers were driving a newer model four-door white car and are described as:

• Male, tall and thin with dark hair and mustache
• Female, tall and thin with long dark hair, wearing black pants
• Female, short and thin with long dark hair, wearing black pants

The City of San Marcos does not conduct water testing within people’s homes.

Residents who are unsure if a person is a City employee should ask to see their City-issued ID badge, which real City employees will always have on hand when they are on duty.
