Open Registration for Free Sign Language Course

Monday, February 2—Register for a free course in American Sign Language at the San Marcos Public Library when you purchase the textbook at the information desk. Classes will meet at 4:00 p.m. every Wednesday from February 18 through April. Instructor Daphney Lee Augustin studied ASL at Kean University and worked as a freelance interpreter for a variety of clients.

 

AARP Free Tax Aid

Monday, February 2—AARP volunteers will assist persons with disabilities, the elderly, and low-income taxpayers file their income tax returns at the San Marcos Public Library from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Taxpayers using this free, walk-in service should bring last year’s income tax return, social security cards for themselves and dependents, a photo ID, and any other tax-related information. Those who prefer to file electronically should bring a check or letter from their bank with bank routing and account numbers. Service is guaranteed to the first 50 people who arrive and sign in by 5:30 p.m.

Wednesday, February 4—The San Marcos Public Library offers free computer classes for adults in Computer Basics, Internet Skills, Email, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Facebook. Call 512.393.8200 to register.

Wednesday, February 4—Readers of popular literature meet at the San Marcos Public Library on first Wednesdays each month at 1:00 p.m. The selection for March is Elephant Company by Vicki Constantine Croke.

 

Lifelong Learning: How to Better Use Your iPhone or iPad

Wednesdays, February 4 to March 11—The San Marcos Public Library and the Texas State Retired Staff & Faculty Association present a 6-week course on Wednesdays at 12:00 p.m. for adults age 50 and over. Bring your iPhone or iPad to class for hands-on instruction covering the basic functions of your device plus other tips and tricks. Lifelong Learning: How to Look at & Appreciate Great Art: Part 2

Thursdays, February 5 to March 12—The San Marcos Public Library and the Texas State Retired Staff & Faculty Association present a 6-week art appreciation course on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. for adults age 50 and over. Learn to read a work of art by observing perspective, texture, light, time, and motion. Finish the course prepared to tour art museums, galleries and exhibitions on your own. Instructor Becky Duval Reese is the former director of UT Austin’s Huntington Art Gallery (now the Blanton Museum) and the El Paso Museum of Art. Lifelong Learning: Texas Authors & Literature: 1542 to the Present

Thursdays, February 5 to March 12—The San Marcos Public Library and the Texas State Retired Staff & Faculty Association present a 6-week literature course on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. for adults age 50 and over. Classes will cover the major writers, books and themes of Texas literature from 1542 to the present including early modern literature, Mexican American and women’s influences, the Mad Dog years of the 60s & 70s and the contemporary writers of today. Instructor Steve Davis has curated over 30 literary exhibits at the Wittliff Collections and has written several books including Texas Literary Outlaws, J. Great Books Discussion Group: Selected Poems by Emily Dickinson

Monday, February 23—The Great Books Discussion Group meets at the San Marcos Public Library each month at 7:00 p.m. to discuss selected literary works. In February, the group will discuss these poems by Emily Dickinson: “There’s a Certain Slant of Light”, “Because I Could Not Stop for Death”, and “After a Great Pain, a Formal Feeling Comes.”
