Earlier this month, the Texas Department of Transportation’s Aviation Division named the San Marcos Regional Airport as its 2022 Reliever Airport of the Year. The award was presented to the City on March 3, 2022, during the 40th Texas Aviation Conference.
The award reflects the San Marcos Regional Airport’s importance to the air transportation system and the positive impact it has on the region.
When presenting the Reliever Airport of the Year award, TxDOT noted the San Marcos Regional Airport’s increased traffic operations, its upcoming multi-million dollar project to reconstruct two main taxiways, proactive airport management, and economic impact.
“As determined in our 2018 Texas Aviation Economic Impact Study, the San Marcos Regional Airport supports 664 jobs with an annual payroll of $22.7 million while contributing $82.1 million in annual economic activity to Texas,” said TxDOT Aviation Division Director Dan Harmon. “Congratulations to the San Marcos Regional Airport, the City of San Marcos, and all of the airport’s partners.”
The updated Airport Master Plan that includes future projects to reconfigure the airfield and increase safety, adopted by City Council in April 2021, also contributed to the decision.
Previous recipients of the Reliever Airport of the Year Award include Scholes International Airport in Galveston and the Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport, formerly known as Lone Star Executive Airport.
The San Marcos Regional Airport is managed by Texas Aviation Partners and is designated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a reliever airport for both the Austin-Bergstrom and San Antonio International Airports.
It has been categorized by the FAA as one of Texas’ 11 National Assets and serves as a rapidly emerging center for business, technology, and mobility.
Spanning 1,420 acres, the San Marcos Regional Airport is home to 14 aviation-related businesses and 240 based aircraft. It also hosts Go Wheels Up! Texas (May 28, 2022), an annual event that promotes the airport and aviation with an air show, a car show, and musical entertainment.
