The growth up and down the Innovation Corridor is no secret and the growth is expected to continue over the next several years. The San Marcos Regional Airport has several projects planned to try to keep up with this growth. The San Marcos Regional Airport is the only reliever airport in Texas for two international airports (Austin-Bergstrom and San Antonio International).
In an effort to reduce power outages and interruptions to the airport, PEC is installing an electrical loop along Highway 21 as a backup feed for the airport. This should mean fewer surges and interruptions for all airport tenants.
Work is ongoing which means there will be an increase of movement along Highway 21 and the fence line. All the poles have been installed and crews are wrapping up the underground section. The project should be completed by the end of the month.
New airfield striping and signage was approved in the City’s FY 2018 budget. It will include new illuminated sign panels for most runways/taxiways and striping lead-in lies onto Runway 13/31 and other movement areas around the airport.
Several vendors are submitting quotes and the new signs should be installed by the end of the summer.
The airport’s Master Plan was last updated in 2001 and is being updated to account for changing demand. The Master Plan looks at long-term airport use, anticipated projects and funding needs over the next 10 years.
The consultant has been selected and work to finalize the scope and contract will begin soon and generally takes about a month to complete. The project should be underway by August/September.
The Plans for an FAA/TxDOT-funded hangar have been submitted and the engineer is coordinating with the permit department and it should go to bid in August with construction beginning in September/October.
The start dates for construction schedules and any associated closures for the projects have yet to be determined.
San Marcos Regional Airport occupies nearly 1,400 acres, San Marcos Regional Airport is the city’s largest parcel of developable land and has been managed by Texas Aviation Partners (TAP) since 2010. The airport is home to more than 250 based aircraft and 13 aviation-related businesses employing over 150 people.
Originally part of Gary Air Field, a World War II Army Air Corps training base, the airport was deeded to the city of San Marcos in 1965.
