San Marcos street named after fallen WWII veteran

Hays County, TX– An initiative to propose new roads be named after local fallen service members and peace officers is beginning in Hays County. The first street dedication took place on Friday, May 28 in the Trace Subdivision in San Marcos and bears the name Lt. John Decker Drive.

Jude Prather, Hays County’s Veterans Services Office Director, said he is working with veteran service organizations and county staff to collect the names of local fallen veterans and peace officers for potential names of future roads.

“Naming roads after these heroes who died in the line of duty will help create a lasting memorial to their ultimate sacrifice,” Prather said.

The first new road was named after a fallen military service member is Lt. John Decker, a Marine who was killed in the Battle of Palau in the Pacific theater during World War II.

During the street dedication, local Hays County officials and family members of Lt. Decker reflected on his bravery and admirable character.

“His aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty was an inspiration to his men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service,” Prather said during the dedication ceremony.

Decker received a Purple Heart and the Silver Star posthumously. Receiving the third highest U.S. military combat decoration, the Silver Star is a high honor.

“This incredible Marine, whose father, Charles Decker, Jr., was the Hays County Judge from 1941-63, will be forever remembered in Hays County with this road bearing his name,” Prather said. “That means his service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
