San Marcos To Take Annual Memorial Day Ceremony Virtual

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the City of San Marcos and local stakeholders have decided to commemorate Memorial Day virtually by creating a short video ceremony to share with the public starting on Monday, May 25.

The video will be shared to the Community Services Facebook page, the City of San Marcos YouTube channel, and broadcast at 10 AM on Spectrum Ch. 10 and Grande Ch. 16 or 123-16.

“We hope the tremendous support from all of the participants for our veterans and survivor communities transcends the screen,” said Lisa Morris, Veteran Affairs Advisory Committee Staff Liaison. “Next year we expect to return to our regular in-person traditions at the Hays County Veterans Memorial.”

The virtual ceremony will feature the annual veteran readings of the Pledge of Allegiance and the lists of names of Hays County soldiers who died in action.

A statement from Mayor Jane Hughson, the national anthem by Ms. Caitlyn Hagerty of San Marcos High School, and an invocation by Pastor Chad Chaddick will be included.

The ceremony will conclude with Taps performed by Gabriel Ortiz, also of San Marcos High School.

The Hays County Veterans Memorial will be open for those wishing to reflect and honor the lives of family members, friends, and fellow veterans who have lost their lives in service to our country.

Please observe social distancing requirements and use of recommended personal protective equipment.

The memorial is located on the corner of Hopkins Street and Riverside Drive. To learn more about the memorial or to purchase a plaque, click here.
