San Marcos Woman Dies in Accident

A head-on collision killed one and left six others injured Sunday, Oct. 2.

Thirty-two-year-old Vanessa Roano was pronounced dead at the scene after a 2011 Toyota Rav 4 crossed the center line and collided with the 2004 Mazdashe was riding in. The driver of the Mazda, 30-year-old Jonathan Aguilar, and the second passenger, Ray Tobias, 35, were critically injured in the collision.

Aguilar was taken to University Medical Center, and Tobias was rushed to St. David’s Hospital in Austin.

In the Toyota, Kimberley Lopez, 27, and passenger Arthur Prieto, 28, suffered critical injuries and were taken to UMC Brackenridge. The other two passengers were five-year-old Faith Prieto and one-year-old Austin Prieto; both were taken by EMS to Dell Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.

Sgt. Darryl Jiral of Texas Highway Patrol said the collision took place around 8:15 pm. East of CR 266; the conditions were clear and dry.

Though the investigation is still pending, Jiral said that alcohol does not appear to be involved, but police have not ruled out anything as of yet. Current evidence indicates Roano and Aguilar were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.

Due to errors in the original report, the information on the crash was not available to the media and public sooner; however, the investigation in to the cause of the accident is still ongoing.
