Staff Reports
School Fuel San Marcos is already gearing up for the Spring Semester and making plans.
Students return to classes in San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District on January 8. And School Fuel will hold it’s first packing day on Thursday, January 10, at 6:20 PM.
The nonprofit organization is looking for volunteers to help with its first packing day of 2019.
Volunteer opportunities are available one or two Wednesdays a month. Donations are taken at any time and all funds go toward supporting the program. Fundraising events can be held by individuals or businesses.
According to the organization, they have spots open for the remainder of the school year, January to May. Interested individuals can sign up here.
In other news, School Fuel is still collecting items for the last two special sacks of the school year. Organizers are looking for sleeves of Ritz Crackers, 1.55oz Hershey Bars, and 18oz jars of peanut butter.
Over spring break, the organization will send out 703 sacks before Spring Break and before Summer Break.
In 2013, School Fuel started as a pilot program to provide food for children who struggled with hunger at home. Today, it serves over 600 students in the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District.
Students who have a high-risk of little or no food at home are provided two sack meals and four snacks for each day of the weekend. On average $215 can feed a child for the entire school year through the program.
School Fuel is a non-profit organization, which relies on donations and volunteers to help provide the food for students. There are four ways to help the effort to help feed these students: volunteer, donate, sponsor or fundraiser.
Over 75 percent of SMCISD students qualify for free or reduced lunch and breakfast.
