School Fuel Seeks Racers For Annual 5k Race, Kid Run

Staff Reports

School Fuel San Marcos is still looking for racers for their annual 5K and Kids Run benefit races.

The event will take place March 9; the 5k race begins at 8 AM and the Kids race begins at 9 AM. Check-in for participants opens at 7 AM. The 5k race is a benefit to provide sacks of food each weekend for 703 school children in San Marcos during the 2018-2019 school year.

Entry fees are $25 thru Feb. 27, $30 from Feb. 28 to March 8 and $35 on race day. The kids run is free to enter. School Fuel aims to reach a goal of $194,000 to provide weekend sacks of food for 903 students in 2019-2020 school year.

All proceeds will go to purchase the 13 items of food that goes into each sack. School Fuel is working on funding to follow 200 of the elementary students into the middle schools. For more information or questions, contact Jenny Mangrum at 512-557-4241

Over spring break, the organization will send out 703 sacks before Spring Break and before Summer Break.

In 2013, School Fuel started as a pilot program to provide food for children who struggled with hunger at home. Today, it serves over 600 students in the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District.

Students who have a high-risk of little or no food at home are provided two sack meals and four snacks for each day of the weekend. On average $215 can feed a child for the entire school year through the program.

School Fuel is a non-profit organization, which relies on donations and volunteers to help provide the food for students. There are four ways to help the effort to help feed these students: volunteer, donate, sponsor or fundraiser.

Over 75 percent of SMCISD students qualify for free or reduced lunch and breakfast.
