Section of I-35 frontage road in San Marcos closed for construction

Sierra Martin | Managing Editor

SAN MARCOS — On Tuesday, May 31, 2022, the northbound I-35 frontage road will be closed between Flores Street and River Road in San Marcos. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) the closure will be in place through August 2022, weather permitting.

The frontage road will be closed as construction crews work to reconstruct the Willow Springs Creek and San Marcos River bridges. Traffic on the northbound I-35 frontage road will be detoured to I-35 using the SH 123 entrance ramp and the next exit (Exit 205 to East Hopkins Street and Highway 80) to rejoin the frontage road.

According to TxDOT, the closure is part of the $107 million I-35 at SH 123 project, funded by CAMPO and TxDOT. Existing I-35 mainlanes and bridges over SH 123/Guadalupe Street will be reconstructed and improved. In addition, the project will reverse and relocate several entrance/exit ramps and add extended entrance/exit lanes along the mainlanes and frontage roads between SH 80 and RM 12.

TxDOT anticipates periodic closures of the river at I-35 to complete the work. Recreational users along the San Marcos River will be notified in advance of any closures via shore signs and can sign up for additional project updates.
