AUSTIN – State Senator Donna Campbell and members of the Texas Conservative Coalition filed an amicus curiae brief with the Texas Third Court of Appeals in support of business groups’ appeal for a temporary injunction against the city’s controversial paid sick leave ordinance.

Austin’s ordinance is scheduled to go into effect on October 1st and would apply to any eligible employee working within the city limits, regardless of where the employer is headquartered, its size, or how many workers are employed.

The Austin Chamber of Commerce has estimated that it will cost local employers $140 million a year to be compliant.

“When local governments infringe in the private sector to penalize job creators with costly mandates and burdensome regulations, the end result is fewer jobs and more businesses moving elsewhere. The City of Austin’s mandatory paid sick leave ordinance violates state law and unfairly hurts small businesses who can least afford it,” said Senator Campbell. “It is against the best interest of Texans who are the backbone of our economy, and the Third Court of Appeals should block it from taking effect.”
