Senator Judith Zaffirini issued a press release Wednesday encouraging judges to check the address listed on their voter registration.
In early 2017, the Texas Senate passed the “Courthouse Security” Bill, which allowed judges to change the addresses on their licenses from their home address to their courthouse address, in honor of State District Judge Julie Kocurek.
According to Sen. Zaffirini’s office, judges who changed their address to their courthouse may have inadvertently changed their voting address as well resulting in problems at the polls.
“Judges should contact their local voter registration official or the Secretary of State’s Office to confirm their voting address,” Zaffirini said. “I also urge judges to vote early to ensure that any issues are addressed before election day.”
Judges can call the Secretary of State’s office via 1-800-252-8683 (Secretary of State’s office) or get contact information for their county voter registration official via https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/votregduties.shtml.
“If you experience this problem, please email Office of Court Administration staff via courtsecurity@txcourts.gov,” the senator said. “Such information will help us determine how to resolve this problem in the future.”
Senate Bill 42, the Judge Julie Kocurek Judicial and Courthouse Security Act of 2017, was intended to enhance not only the privacy and security of judges and their spouses, but also of courthouse personnel and visitors.
Senator Zaffirini encourages anyone who has suggested improvements for this or other legislation to contact her chief of staff, Jorge Ramirez, via jorge.ramirez@senate.texas.gov or 512-463-0121.
