Senior Day Victory For Bobcats Over Warhawks

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A senior played a part in all three goals of the Texas State soccer team’s (4-8-1, 4-4-0 Sun Belt) 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon over ULM (0-8-0, 0-7-0 Sun Belt) at the Bobcat Soccer Complex on Senior Day.

With the win, the Bobcats clinched the #3 West seed in the Sun Belt Conference Championship. 

Gabie Jones played a perfect long ball to Mackenzie Smith late in the sixth minute. Smith was able to flick the ball the other direction from an oncoming defender and sent a through ball into the box.

Sydney Kammer slide in and poked the ball over the reach of the diving goalkeeper to put Texas State up 1-0 on her third goal of the season. 

Late in the 14th minute, the Warhawks were able to counter and a long ball sprung Courtney Marten. Beth Agee came out to the edge of the 18-yard box to block Marten’s breakaway shot attempt to keep ULM off the scoreboard. 

Smith nearly added a goal late in the 27th minute when her header off a corner went a tad bit wide of the left post. 

Quick passing from the Warhawks was able to keep the Bobcats off-balance. The passing ended with Janet Stopka slotting a shot from just inside the penalty box just past the reach of Agee into the right corner to tie the contest 1-1 with seven minutes left until halftime. 

Just over halfway through the 55th minute, Holly Streber received a pass and sent another to her twin sister Kayla Streber. K. Streber sent a pass to an open Kamaria Williams down the right side, who sent in a cross to the back post.

Renny Moore was there to head the ball back to the bottom right corner for her first goal of the season that put the Bobcats up 2-1. 

Nearly five minutes later, Smith was able to challenge a ULM defender to win a corner kick. Moore’s kick found Karlee Torisk, who headed the ball just inside the right post for her first collegiate goal and increased Texas State’s lead to 3-1. 

Wimberly Wright nearly tallied her first goal of the season off an Emma Jones corner kick. However, her header attempt went just over the crossbar early in the 75th minute. 

The last look to add to the Bobcats’ total came with just under 10 minutes to play. Emma Jones had a shot attempt from the top of the box blocked but the ball came right back to her. She passed the ball of to Kiara Gonzales on the right side and the sophomore ripped a shot that went over the crossbar. 

Moore led Texas State with three shots. Both Kammer and Torisk attempted two shots apiece. 

Streber moved up to ninth on the TXST career minutes played list for a field player after playing all 90 minutes. The Austin, Texas native has been on the pitch for 5,468 minutes in her career. 

Agee made eight saves on the afternoon, the most for her in Sun Belt play. She now has 69 stops on the season and ranks as the second-most by a freshman in Bobcat history. Agee also moved up to ninth on both the program’s career and season saves list. 

Next up for the Bobcats is the Sun Belt Championship that takes place Nov. 2-8 in Foley, Alabama. Texas State will take on Troy in the first round at 6:30 PM on Nov. 2.
