Update: Severe Thunderstorm Causes Flash Flooding In San Marcos

Update: Some of the roads closed yesterday due to flooding have reopened. Road status can be found below.

The overnight storm expected to hit San Marcos, Monday, waited until Tuesday morning to strike with heavy rain.

For hours, storm clouds dumped rain and hail on Hays County. By noon, residents in areas like Willow Creek had lost power, and the county was under a flash flood warning, a severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado warning.

San Marcos reported several people had to be rescued by rescue crews throughout the day. While the city did not have a definitive number, residents and business were without power for several hours.

According to the city’s Facebook page, San Marcos Electric Utility workers finished restoring power to affected areas around approximately 11:17 p.m.

Residential rainwater gauges measured at least five inches of rain. One resident reported hers showed over six inches.

The full extent of the damages to residential, commercial and city property is not yet known. However, the San Marcos Public Library has reported water damage from flooding.

A train was reported to be blocking the railroad crossing at McCarthy and Wonder World drive due to damage to the tracks. City officials said Union Pacific was aware, but it is not yet known if the situation has changed.
