The City of San Marcos will host National Weather Service Skywarn Weather Spotting Training Tuesday, April 24 at Fire Station #5, 100 Carlson Circle, from 6-8 p.m.

The training will address severe weather topics specific to South Central Texas, as well as procedures for reporting severe weather to the local Austin/San Antonio National Weather Service Office. Upon completion, participants will be official weather spotters for the National Weather Service.

The class is free and open to the public, with no pre-registration required.

According to the National Weather Service, the United States is the most severe weather-prone country in the world. Each year, people in this country cope with an average of 10,000 thunderstorms, 5,000 floods, 1,200 tornadoes, and two land-falling hurricanes.

Approximately 90% of all presidentially declared disasters are weather-related, causing around 500 deaths each year and nearly $14 billion in damage.
