MUSIC AT THE LIBRARY
Grant Mazak will be featured in a free concert at the San Marcos Public Library on Thursday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m.
Around 30 years ago, Grant Mazak moved to San Marcos to attend SWT to study voice and guitar and to find work as a musician. At this time, the music community was vibrant and friendly to new musicians. Kent Finlay’s Cheatham Street Warehouse was in full swing, offering local musicians a place to play. Kent was always willing to offer advice and help young songwriters hone their craft. Steve Fleming’s Heaven Sound rehearsal studio gave musicians a place to practice, network, and try out new ideas.
Soon Grant teamed up with his student, Terri Hendrix to form an acoustic duo and they found gigs at various local venues. Marion Williamson of Martindale was a friend to both of them and mentored them both in several ways. Terri eventually moved on to pursue her dreams with great success. Grant became best known as an electric guitarist with local country and rock bands. Grant will be returning to his acoustic roots to perform in a free concert at the library this week
It was also 30 years ago that beloved librarian, Robin Wood, began working at the San Marcos Public Library. This concert is a sendoff for Robin as she is about to retire from the library to pursue some of her other, more artistic interests. Robin is a wonderful librarian and is well liked and respected by her peers and by the community. She will be missed at the library, but a welcome addition to the artistic community as a full time artist.
This concert is also a celebration of the lives of three people who have been invaluable to the musical community here in San Marcos. In recent weeks, the community has lost both Kent Finlay and Steve Fleming. Marion Williamson passed away many years ago and is still greatly missed. These people were of inestimable value to the musical community in San Marcos and of very personal value to Grant Mazak when he first became part of that community.
Grant has performed in local dance halls as part of the Rusty Doherty band for many years and was also an early member of The Randy Rogers Band. He is currently a member of Doctor G and the Mudcats, The Willow Creek Project, Wasted Youth, Lonnie Key and the Texas Connection, and the Gypsy Jazz group Gypsy Moon. Grant will be returning to his roots to perform music from early influences such as Paul Simon and John Denver as well as music from more recent influences Townes Van Zandt and Kevin Welch.
Please come out to the library this Thursday evening at 7:00 to hear some great acoustic music and maybe sing along to some old favorites. Hope to see you there.
