The SMA Middle School Volleyball Team placed second in the CALSA District Tournament recently. The squad includes Temi Ogunyomade, Chloe Crawford, Cherry Vasquez, Mia Clay, Katelyn Seebeck, Ava Pizana, Kellee Cummings and Reese Wynn.
San Marcos Academy’s Middle School volleyball team took second place in the Christian Athletic League of San Antonio (CALSA) District tournament Oct. 19 at Fredericksburg Heritage School.
The Lady Bears advanced through the one-day tournament bracket with victories over San Antonio Grace Christian School, Bulverde Living Rock Academy and San Antonio Trinity Christian before falling to the host team, Heritage, in the championship match.
With their tournament wins, the Lady Bears finished their season with an overall 13-4-1 record. They were 7-1 in district play.
“This was my first year coaching for SMA, and it was such a blessing to be a part of this team,” said Lillian Knopf, coach for the Middle School Lady Bears. “This team earned their winning record, as they continued to cheer and be positive up until the final point. That is very hard to do, especially in this sport.”
For their efforts in the tournament, eighth graders Temi Ogunyomade and Kellee Cummings were named team MVP’s. Others on the squad were Cherry Vasquez, Katelyn Seebeck, Reese Wynn, Ava Pizana, Mia Clay and Chloe Crawford.
