About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.

San Marcos Academy senior Jason Zhao was named a Commended Student in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program, Academic Dean Bob Wiegand announced this week.

A letter of commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, was presented to Jason at a school-wide chapel assembly Sept. 24.

In addition to his commended score on the PSAT, Jason earned scores of 5 on the Physics 1 AP Exam and on the AB Calculus AP Exam. He also placed first in the State 4-A TAPPS Science contest in the spring of 2018.

Although they will not continue in the 2019 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PAST/NMSQT).

San Marcos Academy is an accredited private Christian school for day students in grades K-12 and boarding students in grades 6-12.
