SMCISD Hires New Athletics Director To Lead SMHS Rattlers

The San Marcos CISD Board of Trustees approved the hiring of John Walsh to lead the Rattlers as the new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach for San Marcos High School at a regular scheduled board meeting on May 18, 2020.

Coach John Walsh is joining SMCISD following a 15-year career at Texas high school powerhouse, Denton Guyer.

Walsh joins Rattler Nation with a remarkable list of accomplishments including a record of 131-36 in the last 12 seasons and two State Championships.

Along with earning two State Championships, Walsh led Guyer to six appearances in the State Championship Semifinals and four appearances in the State Championship game.

Walsh began his coaching career in 1993 in Merkel ISD followed by a nine-year stint in Brownwood ISD as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator.

In addition to his success on the field, Coach Walsh has a proven background in developing student-athletes. In his 27-years of coaching, Walsh has prepared young athletes to become life-long learners.

Hundreds of players under Coach Walsh have continued their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level – 80 of which have received Division I scholarships.

“My family and I are extremely excited about our new chapter in the city of San Marcos. I personally am honored to be selected as the new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at San Marcos CISD,” Walsh said. “I am eager to put in place a formula that has proven to build a winning culture and get this city crazed about Rattler Athletics. I promise there will not be a slow step taken and the student-athletes of San Marcos will be proud to Strike As One.”

Coach Walsh and his wife Amber have three children – Maggie, Samantha, and JW. Maggie will be a junior at San Marcos HS, Samantha will be a junior at the University of Arkansas, and JW is currently on the football staff at the University of Texas at Austin.

“San Marcos CISD is excited to welcome Coach Walsh and his family to San Marcos,” Superintendent Michael Cardona said. “Coach Walsh joins Rattler Nation with a wealth of knowledge which has led to a proven record of success. His roadmap for creating a winning culture will ensure our students are successful in all that they do.”

A message from Denton ISD Superintendent Dr. Jamie Wilson:

“A special thanks to Coach Walsh for the program established at Guyer High School. He and his staff built the program from the ground up. We wish him the best of luck in his new journey in San Marcos.”

Coach Walsh’s first day in San Marcos CISD was Tuesday, May 19.
