SMCISD Trustees Recognize District Heroes

The San Marcos CISD School Board recognized some district heroes at the May 16, 2016, board meeting.

Miller athletic trainer Britney Webb, San Marcos Police officer Brad Follis, and Coaches Tony Jaramillo and Blake Rubenstein played pivotal roles in the saving of a student’s life on the evening of April 28 during a soccer game between Miller Middle School and Barnes Middle School of Seguin. During the game, a Miller athlete fell unresponsive on the field.

When the coaching staff and Miller Middle School personnel rushed to his side, the student was unconscious. San Marcos athletic trainer Britney Webb assessed the student and began life-saving procedures. San Marcos Police Officer Brad Follis called for an ambulance, and Coach Tony Jaramillo and Coach Blake Rubenstein ran to the gym for the defibrillator.

Trainer Webb administered the AED shock and the student’s heartbeat returned. Paramedics arrived on the scene to stabilize the student. The athlete was conscious and alert when he left in the ambulance for the Dell Children’s hospital in Austin where he continued to improve. The student was kept overnight for observation, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Miller Principal Richard Duvall and the district coaching staff were appreciative of the support given by the Seguin coaches—especially soccer coach Juan Flores—and the Seguin players and supporters who all paused in respect of the situation.
