SMEU(San Marcos Electric Utilities) interns Gary Job Corps

Wonderful Day at Gary Job Corps

submitted by Randolph Goodman

As part of the training that they receive Gary Job Corps overhead linesman students  are interning with the San Marcos Electric Utilities Department (SMEU).

The students worked with 3 SMEU crews and on service trucks which were alternated every day, which would involve coning off trucks; setting  outriggers for trucks; running hand line for materials up and down pole; closing in cutouts with extend-sticks, shoveling around pole after setting; loading poles at office and loading material for jobs. And giving advice on jobs, to the best way to do jobs.

We would do tailboards before every job to show the 911 address, description of the job, hazards of the job, personal protective equipment for the job and signing the tailboard to verify they understand the job.

Thomas Medrano, SMEU Electric Crew Leader, stated that “ this will the first of many internships with the Gary students showing them the real life situations as an overhead linesman.  I have been very impressed by the knowledge of the students and their professionalism”.
