SMHS Psychology Club Concludes A Busy Spring Schedule With A Donation

After being met with a warm reception, members were allowed to visit three classes which included abnormal psychology, psychopharmacology, and health psychology.

The San Marcos High School Psychology Club kicked off their spring semester with a very busy schedule indeed.

On January 26, 2017, as a precursor to their trip to the Texas State University Psychology Department, the Psychology Club had the honor of hosting Dr. Amy Meeks, Senior Lecturer, during one of their weekly meetings.

Dr. Meeks discussed the various classes and organizations available at Texas State while informing potential psychology majors about the professors and life on campus.

Next, the Psychology Club had the privilege of touring the Texas State University campus as well as meeting with Dr. William Kelemen, the head of the Psychology Department.

After being met with a warm reception, members were allowed to visit three classes which included abnormal psychology, psychopharmacology, and health psychology.

Members were incredibly grateful to experience an actual college lecture and to have the opportunity to meet with members of the Psi Chi Association.

In addition to the three classes, the Psychology Club was able to visit the sleep research lab and watch a hands-on demonstration of how Dr. Carmen Westerberg conducts sleep studies.

One of their own members got to wear an electrode cap that detected brainwaves and eye movement: a fun and enjoyable way to review for their upcoming test.

The next big event for the Psychology Club came when they sponsored Psychology Awareness Week, an interactive three-day event that gave students at San Marcos High School the opportunity to see different aspects of psychology.

Hosted by the Psychology Club officers, the three-day event included  pseudo-psychology, a fun blend of palm reading, dream analysis, and tarot card readings; personality, in which students got to create their own Rorschach Inkblot tests; and sensation and perception, which allowed the students to experience distortion goggles while attempting to play a game of cornhole (bean bag toss).

After a successful week of mind games and fun, the Psychology Club wrapped up their first months of the semester with a trip to Texas Lutheran University.

While visiting, members of the Psychology Club had the opportunity to learn about scholarship opportunities, sit in on a Statistics class taught by department chair, Dr. Michael Czuchry, visit the dorms that are available to the residential students, and were able to experience some of the unique cultural aspects of campus life.

The club will be completing the spring semester with a donation to the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center and a celebration to honor this year’s graduates.
