UPDATE 9:29 PM: A man fatally shot a City of San Marcos police officer and wounded two others this evening at Twin Lake Villas Apartments, 2917 Hunter Rd. Police report that the suspect is deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A call to 911 for an assault/domestic disturbance was received at 6:05 PM and officers responded to the incident at the apartment complex. During the course of their response, the suspect ambushed the officers with a rifle.
“We are heartbroken to make this announcement,” said Interim Police Chief Bob Klett. “We ask for your support for our fellow officers and their families as we try to cope with yet another tragic event in our San Marcos Police family”
The two surviving officers were transported to Ascension Seton Hays in Kyle where they have undergone surgery. All families have been notified.
This is the second line of duty death for the San Marcos Police Department since Officer Kenneth Copeland was shot and killed while serving a warrant on December 4, 2017.
The San Marcos Police Department will hold a press conference at 10 AM, Sunday, April 19.
Governor Greg Abbott tonight issued the following statement after it was reported that multiple San Marcos Police Department officers were shot while serving in the line of duty:
“Tonight’s shooting in San Marcos is a somber reminder of the service and sacrifice our brave men and women in law enforcement make every day to keep us safe. I am grateful for the swift action of the San Marcos Police Department in containing the threat and minimizing the loss of life. I ask all Texans to join Cecilia and me in praying for the officer killed and for those injured, and for the continued safety of all law enforcement officers who protect our communities.”
UPDATE 7:43 p.m.: The area has been secured and there is no additional threat to the public. Please continue to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
The San Marcos Police Department is requesting residents near Hunter Road to shelter in place due to an incident Saturday.
Hunter Road is currently closed at Reimer Avenue to McCarty Rd for an in-progress investigation, according to the SMPD.
The public has been asked to avoid the area until it has been made safe. Currently, the situation remains active.
