SMPD Investigating First Traffic Fatality Of 2019

On February 28, 2019 at approximately 2:22 a.m., San Marcos Police, Fire and EMS were dispatched to a fatal traffic collision in the 300 block of Staples Road.

At the scene, police found that a black Harley Davidson Motorcycle driven by Armando Puentes (12/31/1974) had run into a Texas Disposal Systems garbage truck. Police determined that Puentes is a resident of the Redwood Community, and notified next of kin.

Through preliminary investigation with the Collision Investigation Team (CIT), it was determined the garbage truck was blocking the roadway while it was dumping a large trash dumpster.

Investigators believe that Mr. Puentes collided with the garbage truck and sustained injuries that led to his death.

Justice of the Peace Joann Prado responded and ordered an autopsy of Puentes. CIT is still investigating. Members of the Texas Department of Public Safety also responded to the scene to assist.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours. This is the first traffic fatality in San Marcos for 2019.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call San Marcos Police Department Commander Christopher Tureaud at 512.754.2201.
