Speed Limit Changed To 30 mph On Hopkins, Hunter Road

Drivers are being reminded that the speed limit on Hopkins Street and Hunter Road between Guadalupe Street and Wonder World Drive has been reduced to 30 mph to increase safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians through this busy urban area.

The stretch of road is characterized by a combination of historical, residential, restaurant, and retail properties which generate significant bike and pedestrian activity.

The ordinance establishing the new speed limit passed on second reading during the Sept. 4 City Council meeting. The new speed limit signs were installed Sept. 5, and San Marcos Police are issuing warnings, within reason, in the new speed limit zone until Oct. 5. Lighted message boards have been set up in the area alerting motorists of the new speed limit.

Previously, speed limits were set by the Texas Department of Transportation at 35 mph and 40 mph. The speed limit change was initiated by the City of San Marcos Public Services-Transportation Department based on concerns raised by citizens and residents along Hopkins.

In 2017, TxDOT removed these portions of Hopkins Street and Hunter Road from the state highway system and transferred maintenance and jurisdiction to the City of San Marcos, including the ability to set speed limits as allowed by the Texas Transportation Code.
