Spring Lake Project In San Marcos Receives Grant For Mapping Work

The Texas Historical Foundation approved a grant to The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University in San Marcos to help fund equipment for the underwater excavation and mapping of Spring Lake, formerly Aquarena Springs.

David D. Martinez, president of THF, commented, “This Foundation has a long record of supporting archaeological projects in the state. Spring Lake may be one of the oldest continually habited sites in North America. We believe that the Meadows Center excavation will yield exciting archaeological data that can be studied for years to come and may add to the state’s historical record.”

Since 1954, the Texas Historical Foundation has funded preservation and education projects around the state and helps promote the cultural legacy of Texas. The group’s leading efforts include its award-winning Texas HERITAGE magazine and this preservation grants program.
