Starting From Scratch: Families Code Together

Hey, kids: want to learn to code? Hey, parents: want to understand this coding stuff your kids are talking about?

Coding is trending for good reason. Learning to code teaches children problem solving, creativity, logic, and computational thinking.

It also builds a base for further learning and even valuable future job skills. Children are highly motivated to learn coding due to its use in computer games and apps.

But adults can find it daunting to help and encourage their children who want to learn this new skill.

Professor Sean Justice of Texas State University will be offering two coding workshops for families at the San Marcos Public Library.

Children ages 9 to 12 and their parents will learn the basics of Scratch together. Scratch is a free, online, child-friendly coding program which can be used to build actual programs and games.

It also teaches basic understanding of coding principles and theory in a fun, interactive way, using puzzles, graphics and sounds.
