Texas State Bobcat Nets Match-Winner In Double Overtime Game Against Little Rock

The Trojans soccer team dominated possession in the first half with an 8-2 advantage in shots.

Little Rock, Ark. – Senior Alyssa Phelan netted her second match-winning goal this season when she volleyed a shot past the keeper just over halfway through the second overtime period of a 3-2 win over Little Rock at the Coleman Sports & Recreation Complex.

The victory extended the Bobcats’ winning streak to six matches and snapped the Trojans 13-match home unbeaten streak.

Texas State is now 9-4-1 overall and 7-1-0 in the Sun Belt Conference. The team remains alone atop the conference standings with 21 points, three points better than South Alabama. LR dropped to 7-7-2 on the season and 2-3-2 in conference play.

The Trojans dominated possession in the first half with an 8-2 advantage in shots. Heather Marin made four saves with her third being the biggest. After the Bobcats were called for a hand ball in the box on a corner kick in the 25 minute, the sophomore dived to her right to make the penalty kick stop.

Late in the 31 minute, Texas State’s scoreless streak was snapped at 560:55 when LR’s Lillian Davis redirected a shot from just inside the box into the upper left corner. The goal came off a corner kick that was awarded despite deflecting off a Trojan player on a free kick into the box.

Alyssa Phelan had the first shot of the match for the Bobcats 44 seconds after the Trojan goal. Her hard rip was stopped by the goalkeeper to keep TXST off the scoreboard.

LR took the second half kickoff and less than a minute in had a strong opportunity to increase its lead. Martin came up with a diving save to her left to keep it a one-goal deficit.

The Bobcats took advantage with the wind to their backs and were more aggressive from that point forward. Jordan Kondikoff had two great opportunities from the top of the 18-yard box. Her first shot was right at the keeper while her second hit off the crossbar.

Early in the 60 minute, Genesis Turman sent in a cross from the right side. Kaylee Davis headed it towards the upper portion of the net. The ball deflected off the keeper’s hands and into the goal to tie the score 1-1.

Kassi Hormuth put TXST ahead 2-1 when she ripped a shot from 30 yards out from the left side into the upper right corner.

With 38.2 seconds left in regulation, a Trojan player ripped a shot that was blocked by Turman. Her momentum carried her into the LR player to knock her down. The ref awarded a penalty kick that was buried into left corner by Morgan Smocovich to send the match into overtime.

In the 106th minute, Brooke Ramsey got the ball in quickly on a throw-in down the left sideline. Davis ran on to it and sent it towards the far post to the feet of Alyssa Phelan. Following a quick one-touch, she sent the ball into the back of the net for the match-winner.

The Trojans held a 16-15 edge in shots over the Bobcats. Hormuth, Kondikoff and Phelan led the team with three shots apiece. Davis and Turman both took two shots each.

Martin tied her career-high with eight saves between the posts to earn her eighth win of the season.
