San Marcos, Texas – At 7 p.m. on Sunday, the Texas State soccer team welcomes Appalachian State to town at the Bobcat Soccer Complex in the lone match of the weekend for the Bobcats. It is the first of two consecutive weekends in which TXST plays only once.
Coming into the weekend, the Bobcats have won four of their last five matches to sport a 5-4-1 overall record and are tied for first in the Sun Belt Conference with a 3-1-0 mark. The Mountaineers are 2-7-2 on the season and 1-2-0 in conference play. They will host Arkansas State on Friday before making the trip to San Marcos.
Rachel Grout continues to pace TXST with three goals, three assists and nine points. Kassi Hormuth has also netted three goals this season and for the fourth straight year while adding two assists. The Cedar Park, Texas native moved into a tie for 10th on the program’s career list in both assists (11) and shots on goal (60). She is also one shot attempt shy of cracking the top 10 list in that category too.
Tallying two goals apiece are Kaylee Davis, Sydney Kammer and Renny Moore. The trio of Jordan Kondikoff, Alyssa Phelan and Jessica Pikoff have been credited with two assists each.
Heather Martin has appeared to solidify her spot as the team’s starting goalkeeper. After recording two shutouts last weekend, the sophomore lowered her GAA to 1.00 that ranks third in the league. She has made 24 saves and sports a .800 save percentage, the third highest in the SBC.
Backing Martin up in net is Kathryn Budde. She sports a 1.13 GAA, fourth in the Sun Belt, 13 saves and a .722 save percentage.
Scouting Appalachian State
Appalachian State is coming off a 1-0 loss at home to Troy last Sunday. In the opening weekend of SBC action, the Mountaineers fell at South Alabama 2-1 in double overtime and then beat Georgia State 2-1 on the road. Their lone non-conference victory this season was against Davidson while they drew against Ball State and UNC Greensboro each by a 1-1 score.
Pacing APP with three goals is Ava Dawson and Kat Greer. Sharon Osterbind has found the back of the net twice and assisted on two scores. Leading the team with three assists is Emmily Cowie. Five players have attempted double-digit shots led by Lindsey Tully with 19.
In goal, Ray Taylor has played every second of the Mountaineers’ three Sun Belt matches. She has played 672:33 minutes between the posts to pace the squad while allowing 13 goals for a 1.74 GAA and made 29 saves for a .690 save percentage. Lauren Burke has started three contests and sports a 0.90 GAA, .778 save percentage and stopped seven shots. Appearing in three matches with a start is Sam Steyl. She has given up three goals for a 1.47 GAA and made six saves for a .667 save percentage.
Series vs. Mountaineers
The all-time series between TXST and APP is tied 1-1-1. Last season the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Boone, North Carolina after Hormuth tied the match exactly 48 minutes into the contest. In 2015, the Mountaineers handed the Bobcats their worst loss since joining the SBC, 5-0. The first meeting between the programs saw TXST win 2-1 in overtime at home on Oct. 5, 2014.
