The regular season begins for TXST on Nov. 12 at Air Force in both teams’ first game of the Men Against Breast Cancer Showcase and broadcast on ESPN3.
San Marcos, Texas – Coming off just the second 20-win season as a Division I program, the Texas State men’s basketball team held its first official practice Monday, Oct. 2, afternoon in one of the Strahan Coliseum practice gyms to official kickoff the 2017-18 season.
The Bobcats ended last year with a 22-14 record, reached the Sun Belt Conference Tournament finals and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in head coach Danny Kaspar’s fourth season in charge. TXST also finished in a tie for third in the SBC regular season standings with an 11-7 record, the best mark since joining the league.
“We were happy to get on the floor and have longer than 45 minute to an hour. The players worked hard and gave me great effort,” said Kaspar. “There are a lot of mistakes to correct but that is expected on the first day. It is a good group guys I enjoying working with them and I look forward to some more hard-working practices as we get ready for a good year.”
Seven players return from last season’s squad and are joined by eight newcomers. Among the returners is sophomore Nijal Pearson who averaged 13.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game. The only other starter that is back is Immanuel King, a Sun Belt All-Tournament Team selection, who started the final 23 games of the year and paced the team with 38 blocks. Also back from last season are Tyler Blount, Marlin Davis, Deris Duncan, Nedeljko Prijovic and Eric Terry.
Joining them will be junior college transfers Isaiah Gurley, Tre’Larenz Nottingham and Alex Peacock. Jaylen Shead joins the Bobcats from Cal Poly out of the Big West and will sit out the 17-18 season because of NCAA transfer rules. Fresh out of high school are Shelby Adams, Reggie Miller, Quentin Scott and Alonzo Sule.
“We have a lot of newcomers that can help us this year. Isaiah, Tre’Larenz and Alex are all junior college players that can help right away. We are also getting some good minutes from Reggie and Shelby,” Kaspar said. “I think we will have our deepest team since I have been here where we can go to our bench more readily than in the past.
Fans will have an opportunity to get their first look at the Bobcats in action on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. when they host Rogers State in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. in Strahan Coliseum. The regular season begins for TXST on Nov. 12 at Air Force in both teams’ first game of the Men Against Breast Cancer Showcase and broadcast on ESPN3.
